Formed in 2006, Hamer Quartet were winners of the 2009 Asia Pacific Chamber Music Competition, taking out the Audience Prize, the First Prize for String Quartets and the Musica Viva Grand Prize for best Australian Ensemble. In 2010, HQ were nominated as one of the Top 100 most influential by THE AGE magazine, and voted ‘Best Newcomer’ by the ABC Limelight awards. In the same year, the quartet were fellows at Australian National Academy of Music.
Hamer Quartet were Artists in Residence at Monash University in 2007, and held a residency at the University of Melbourne’s Trinity College, Parkville in 2010.
HQ has performed extensively across Australia and overseas, including performances at the Norwich and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in the UK and Pro Quartet in Paris, as well as studying across Europe, including Prussia Cove International Musicians Seminar with Andras Kellar, and Germany and Vienna with such outstanding musicians as Hatto Beyerle, Gerhard Schultz, Paul Katz, Heime Muller and Barbara Westphal.
They have collaborated with renowned didgeridoo player William Barton as part of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music’s Outback Tour; and performed in regional concerts for Chamber Music Australia.
HQ has been recorded extensively by ABC Classic FM, 3MBS FM, and has appeared on television for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Hamer Quartet’s recording debut on Melba Records international release which included the rarely recorded “On Wedlock edge” by Benjamin Britten was reviewed by BBC Radio 3 as “eloquent… If the programme appeals – and i think it’s unique – then buy it – the Britten is the stuff”.
